Mr. Artie Jefferson cleans the burial plot of his girlfriend of 26 years, Patricia Hardy, who passed away in February, at Evergreen Cemetery. Recently, owners of the cemetery stopped maintaining this area, the only section of the 60-acre cemetery they had kept up. So he and his friend, Norman Jones, took it upon themselves to tame the area--and to build an enclosure for Ms. Hardy. Richmond, VA, 2016

Custalo family headstone at East End Cemetery. William Custalo—restaurateur, bank officer, and founding member of the cemetery’s first burial association—was one of Richmond’s most prominent African Americans at the beginning of the 20th century. On the heels of Reconstruction, Black Richmond was at its height—the Jackson Ward neighborhood was called “Black Wall Street” and the “Harlem of the South.” Custalo lived long enough to see the first of many successful attacks by Richmond's white elite on the rights and privileges won by African Americans in the Civil War—among these the disenfranchisement of the overwhelming majority of black males by Virginia's 1902 constitution. Henrico County and Richmond, VA, 2015
